Everything I Read in February ‘23

M is for Mama by Abbie Halberstadt

I had mixed feelings about this one. I think the topics discussed were important and I was in agreement with the author about a lot of things, but I felt like the tone of the writing was a bit arrogant and judgmental. I didn’t get much out of this book, so maybe it just wasn’t for me.

Becoming Free Indeed by Jinger Duggar Vuolo

Becoming Free Indeed focuses on the toxic theology of IBLP, the teachings of Bill Gothard, and how Jinger has separated her faith from the legalistic church in which she was raised. She refers to this process as “disentangling” rather than “deconstructing” because it did not cause her to walk away from her faith, it made it stronger. I know not everyone who deconstructs leaves the church, but there is definitely a stereotype there so this distinction was an important one.

There are a few things in the book that I disagree with from a theological standpoint, but, I understand and respect Jinger’s viewpoint and it was so interesting to read her story. If you didn’t grow up in conservative Christian culture, haven’t experienced religious trauma, and don’t know who the Duggars are, I’m not sure if this book would be relevant to you.

The Hiding Place by Corrie Ten Boom

This was the book chosen for the book club that I’m a part of. It was so good! I found there was more wisdom and depth than in most Christian books I’ve read. Corrie Ten Boom’s story is so inspiring and thought-provoking. The Hiding Place is a must-read for Believers! I probably would not have chosen to read it again if not for the book club, but I’m so glad I did.

Five Feet Apart by Rachael Lippincott

I have always wanted to read this book even though I didn’t care for the movie too much. I thought maybe the book would be better, but, it turns out the book is based on the screenplay of the movie so it was very similar. I give this book three stars. It was okay, and I probably won’t read it again. The cover art is beautiful though!

The Inheritance Games by Jennifer Lynn Barnes

I would never have picked this book up if I had not seen it on Social Media because the cover art doesn’t really appeal to me and it doesn’t look like something I would normally gravitate towards. I guess one of my toxic traits is that I judge books by their covers too much. HOWEVER, this series is so good and I can’t wait to read the other two books. It’s a mystery that is similar to ‘Knives Out’ and so far I really like it.
